Overview
The Moro Gulf, the broad embayment separating southwestern Mindanao from the Zamboanga Peninsula, sits above one of the most productive earthquake sources in the Philippine archipelago, and on 23 July 2010 it produced a magnitude 7.6 shock. The solution places the epicentre at 6.49 N, 123.47 E, within the Celebes Sea seismic belt where the Sunda and Philippine Sea plate systems converge. Shaking was assessed at Mercalli intensity IV, moderate enough to be widely felt but below the threshold at which masonry typically fails. The significant-earthquake catalogue records no fatalities, no injuries, and no monetary loss, and it lists no focal depth, a common omission for offshore Philippine shocks of this period.
