地震概况
New Caledonia occupies a complex tectonic position in the southwest Pacific, where the geology records the collision and subduction history of the Australian and Pacific plates over the past 50 million years. The main island of Grande Terre sits on the Norfolk Ridge — a submarine continental fragment rifted from eastern Gondwana and partially subducted or obducted during the late Eocene arc-continent collision that created the ophiolite sequences exposed prominently in southern New Caledonia. To the east, the Loyalty Ridge and Loyalty Islands represent remnants of an older Pacific volcanic arc, now stranded on the Australian Plate side of the boundary. To the north and northwest, the Vanuatu (New Hebrides) arc system — one of the Pacific's most seismically active [[subduction]] boundaries — lies approximately 400 to 700 kilometres away and represents the dominant regional seismic source influencing New Caledonia. The [[subduction]] geometry in the Vanuatu system generates both shallow interface and intermediate intraslab earthquakes whose [[seismic-wave]]s regularly propagate to New Caledonia.
The historical seismicity of New Caledonia itself is relatively modest compared to adjacent arc systems, but several significant events have affected the territory. The 26 November 1999 Vanuatu earthquake ([[moment-magnitude]] 7.5) generated a [[tsunami]] with waves of approximately 2 metres on the Loyalty Islands, causing some coastal damage and demonstrating the territory's exposure to tsunamis generated by the New Hebrides arc. The 10 August 2010 Vanuatu earthquake ([[moment-magnitude]] 7.2) and the 7 February 2013 Solomon Islands earthquake ([[moment-magnitude]] 8.0) both generated [[tsunami]] warnings affecting New Caledonia. A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck within New Caledonia's maritime territory in 2021, generating a [[tsunami]] warning for the Loyalty Islands. The 5 March 2015 sequence of earthquakes near Vanuatu also produced regional [[tsunami]] threats evaluated by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center for New Caledonia's coastlines.
The geological framework of New Caledonia records the most complete obducted ophiolite sequence in the world — the Koniambo and Tiébaghi massifs in the north and the Massif du Sud in the south — representing former ocean floor thrust onto the continental fragment during the late Eocene arc-continent collision. This ophiolite hosts the world's largest known nickel laterite deposits, the product of deep weathering of the ultramafic ocean-floor rocks. The Loyalty Islands are geologically distinct from Grande Terre, being built on volcanic arc basement and draped with raised coral limestone uplifted by proximity to the Vanuatu fore-arc region; the d'Entrecasteaux Ridge collision with the central New Hebrides arc is responsible for anomalous uplift of the Loyalty chain. The tectonic quiescence of New Caledonia's immediate offshore region contrasts with the intense seismicity of the Vanuatu arc 400 kilometres to the north, and the territory's [[tsunami]] hazard is dominated by events generated at the New Hebrides [[subduction]] zone.

常见问题解答
New Caledonia has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 8 earthquakes have been recorded in New Caledonia's seismic history.
The largest recorded earthquake in New Caledonia had a magnitude of 5.1. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.
New Caledonia has had 8 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
New Caledonia is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Oceania. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
